Während ursprünglich die Landschaften der Erde das Leben des Menschen bestimmten und häufig erschwerten, hat sich dieser Zustand mit dem technischen Fortschritt der Zivilisation umgekehrt. Landschaften verwandeln sich in Industriestandorte, werden zum Zwecke der Freizeitgestaltung und Vermarktung kultiviert, als religiöse Symbole vereinnahmt oder als ästhetisches Bild zu Werbeträgern umfunktioniert. Dabei befinden sich die ästhetisierten Landschaften zunehmend in Konkurrenz mit künstlichen Cityscapes, deren politisch motivierte Planer danach streben, das Erhabene der Natur auf ihre Artefakte zu übertragen. Landscape und Cityscape werden auf diese Weise zu Landmarks, zu gleichrangigen Symbolen zivilsatorischen Handelns, das seinen Ausdruck in der Gestaltung menschlicher Lebensräume findet. Es stellt sich die Frage, was wir unter Landschaft verstehen.
Whereas the landscapes on the earth used to determine people's lives, often making them more difficult, this situation has been turned around in the course of the technological advances of civilization. Landscapes are transformed into industrial locations; they are cultivated for the sake of leisure time activities and marketing, claimed as religious symbols, or as an aesthetic image they are converted into advertising. Aestheticized landscapes start competing more and more with artificial cityscapes, whose politically motivated planners strive to imbue their artifacts with the loftiness of nature. Landscapes and cityscapes thus become landmarks, equivalent symbols of the actions of civilization, as expressed in the design of human living spaces. We have to ask what we mean by the term landscape.

As an image of society's program, the fighter becomes a code that can be cracked if the observer has the ability to decipher it. If the observer fails, his perception registers only the surface, which nevertheless carries meaning within it.
